چکیده

This is the third part of a series on various taxonomic matters regarding Neotropical stingless bee genus Scaptotrigona Moure (Apinae: Meliponini). Here, an infrageneric classification established, with Sakagamilla resurrected for tubiba group, while Moure, s.str., encompasses postica group. A key to subgenera presented and five new are established: Eoscaptotrigona Engel, subgenus; Dasytrigona Gymnotrigona Baryorygma Astegotrigona subgenus. The former bipunctata species group considered embody two unrelated groups luteipennis also belong among these. Six described, which would have formerly been included in remainder depilis group: (Eoscaptotrigona) totobi species, from Venezuela Colombia; S. (Gymnotrigona) psile Venezuela; aurantipes nuda Bolivia; stipula Brazil; (Baryorygma) fimbriata Bolivia.

Australian and New Guinean Stingless Bees of the Genus Austroplebeia Moure (Hymenoptera: Apidae)--a revision.

The stingless bee genus Austroplebeia Moure occurring in Australia and New Guinea is revised, based on a morphological analysis of samples from 177 colonies. Five species are recognised: A. cincta (Mocsáry), A. essingtoni (Cockerell), A. australis (Friese), A. cassiae (Cockerell) and A. magna, sp. nov. Three different colour morphs of A. australis are described. Five new synonymies are proposed...

Recruitment communication in stingless bees (Hymenoptera, Apidae, Meliponini)

The stingless bees (Hymenoptera, Apidae, Meliponini) have evolved sophisticated communication systems that allow foragers to recruit nestmates to good resources. Over the past 50 years, a growing body of research has shown that foragers can communicate three-dimensional resource location, uncovered several potential communication mechanisms, and demonstrated new information transfer mechanisms....

Chemical basis for inter-colonial aggression in the stingless bee Scaptotrigona bipunctata (Hymenoptera: Apidae).

Inter-colonial aggression was tested using three colonies of Scaptotrigona bipunctata in a natural setting when their nests were moved and by artificial contact between individuals. Examination of the cuticular lipids of individuals from two colonies kept under identical conditions showed clear differences in their cuticular hydrocarbon profiles. The cuticular lipids were a mixture of hydrocarb...

The effect of tropical deforestation on stingless bees of the genus Melipona (Insecta: Hymenoptera: Apidae: Meliponini) in central Rondonia, Brazil

Aims (1) 2 To determine whether deforestation has affected the incidence of species of Melipona in an area undergoing deforestation. (2) To highlight the potential use of GIS and remote-sensed environmental variables in studies of insects as bioindicators of landscape change. Location Central Rondonia, Brazil in the south-western Amazon Basin, an area under intense deforestation pressure for ag...

Diversity and distribution of orchid bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae) with a revised checklist of species.

The aim of this study was to investigate the diversity and distribution patterns of orchid bees (Euglossina). Cluster and correlation analyses were applied to data extracted from 28 orchid-bee surveys throughout the Neotropical Region. The 28 sampling sites were grouped in three main biogeographic areas that roughly correspond to the Amazonian Basin, the Atlantic Forest and Central America. The...
